 I  HAD  NO  FORESIGHT
google image

As the Hilsa fry* melt in my palate
I am in heaven
And all those shiny heavenly bodies
Become meat balls and pies
To thousand children’s dreamy eyes
I sigh

As I savor each page of Hungry Tide**
I am in heaven
And all the words of heavenly manna
Become hard rock and stone
On thousand minds’ treading zone
I moan

As He in Heaven smiles and asks
“What have you fed your soul with?”
I remain silent and become shy
Slowly comes my broken reply
“My soul’s never been hungry”

*A Bengali delicacy

  1. The appetites of life are seductive indeed, could it be possible God put them here for us to avoid? A fun and poignant, balanced poem with its wake up call from title to the end. Thanks!

  2. what have you fed your soul with...what an apt question...and a prickly one at that...ah what a broken reply that would be for sure...

  3. Love the last stanza, Sumana. It is as important to have one's soul feeling 'full' as having one's stomach full....

  9. A skillful juxtaposition - food for the body contrasted with nourishment for the soul. Well done.

  10. Sumana, what a fabulous poem you have written. The last stanza is unparallelled.

  11. Nourishing the soul is just as important as nourishing the body ... for when the body gives out, the soul passes on ... hopefully happy and ready for new mysteries that come
