THE OWL

Why has Lakshmi* chosen the owl?
Goddess of fortune with Dark Knight?
No one dares to be out and prowl
Why has Lakshmi chosen the owl?
A scampering mouse finds night foul
Lakshmi’s bounty makes ploughmen
bright
Why has Lakshmi chosen the owl?
Goddess of fortune with Dark
Knight?
*In Hindu religion Lakshmi is the
goddess of wealth and prosperity and She has a white owl as her carrier. I
think she seems to assure agricultural prosperity as her owl provides a free service
of eradicating rodents and thus securing a good harvest…..

Your repeating questions really work well in this poem, making the reader think. I do think the owl was a good choice of carrier. In addition to getting rid of mice, they are 'wise' birds as well!
ReplyDeleteinteresting...perhaps because true wealth comes to the wise....those willing to look beyond the material....
ReplyDeletevery nice take...
Love the repetition of questions, adds weight to this great write.
ReplyDeleteI love the image of Lakshmi looking over the poem, both as an image and as character.
ReplyDeleteGreat use of the repeated question in your poem, Sumana! I did not know about Lakshmi being portrayed with an owl. Whatever the reason the goddess seems in good company.

ReplyDeleteLaksmi must have a special reason of wanting to do good, no doubt about it! Thanks Sumana, for the elaborating on Lakshmi as a background note!

ReplyDeleteYour poem is one of the reasons I so enjoy the blogosphere of poetry--I was unfamiliar with Lakshmi and her owl. Thanks for sharing this.
