FIVE SUGARED ALMONDS

FIVE SUGARED ALMONDS

Five sugared almonds

As Wedding favors

Ensure marital bliss

In some cultures

An odd number is

Indivisible

The tradition notes that

Five is the winsome

Showering health

Happiness, wealth

L o n g e v i t y

And fertility

To the newly wed

And two become one

Till death separates

Humans forever

Care for love, beauty

And creation

Never a war nor a carnage

For humans

Only if humans

  1. The gift of five sugared almonds is a wonderful wedding tradition, I think. So simple, yet so meaningful, Sumana. It is very nice to begin life together with such blessings as these.

  2. I have learned something new, Sumana. I like how rites, even apparently small ones, add meaning to important life cycle events. And in the end we all crave for peace, love and beauty, I agree.

  5. Excellent and what a great tradition. In the Bible the number 5 represents the grace of God, free unmerited favour. This really fit in with the marriage tradition. i love the way you make thus really make love sing.

  6. Sugared almonds figure prominently in Southern European wedding traditions, also, Sumana. I liked your poem and the ending is indeed is something that humans can aspire to...
