Dream
source
My heart beats with you
When you rise
From the waves
Of golden mustard field
And dance
Twinkle twinkle
Bollywood star
How I wonder
What you are
Million hearts
Laugh, cry and sing with you
I tell you
You are made of moonlight
You say, “Sweat”
Up above the world
So high
Your hearts shine
In the sky
Your words are ours
We gift them to our loved ones
I tell you
You are made of dream
You say, “Industry”
When the blazing sun
Is gone
When nothing
Shines upon
Our dark cottages gasp for a
little air
You gift us a sky to breathe in
I tell you
You are made of grace
You say “your love”
You do show your
Magic light
Twinkle twinkle
All the night
Bollywood stars of Hindi films
have been entertaining millions of people for one hundred years now. Films of
all genres have been made. Romantic flicks with delightful songs and dances
that make the mass forget their sorrows for the time being are all time
favorites. The film industry churns out bucks for many a mouth. I’ve included
two videos: one is on Indian heart throbs Mr. Shah Rukh Khan & Ms. Madhuri
Dikshit singing & dancing in the film “Dil
To Pagal hai (Crazy heart)” and the other is Mr. Raj Kapoor, the great
showman of Hindi cinema, singing in the film “Shree 420(Mr. 420, section 420 of
the Indian Penal Code covers offences relating to cheating and dishonestly
inducing delivery of property and leads to punishments or fine and / or jail
terms of up to 7 years). Hope you enjoy the songs and language poses no bar.

I just became aware of Bollywood films in recent years. But I know I have only touched the surface of your great industry. Movies do make a person dream for sure. Good escapism sometime from the mundane. I cannot see videos. I will check back again another day.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun - and interesting - take on the prompt, Sumana. I do remember watching several Bollywood films in university many, many years ago as part of a student multicultural club series, and enjoyed them. These days, the movies are extremely popular in Vancouver. In fact, in 2013 the city held the inaugural Times of India Film Awards gala, which was a three-day celebration of South Asian film, dance and music. It was all over the local media at the time, as I recall. And rightly so - over 40,000 people attended.
ReplyDeleteHow interesting Wendy!!..It's really beautiful and enriching experience when one culture embraces another....
DeleteA beautiful dream world lies there!
ReplyDeleteBollywood films have reached fame in Europe too and have a following. I have caught glimpses of them in Indian restaurants and they certainly seem full of glitter and dreams.
ReplyDeleteSounds like a romantic dreamer versus common practicality. Beautifully written.
ReplyDeleteThis really sings of fun and love and captures the spirit of Bollywood. Well Done.
ReplyDeletePretty poem - loved the videos! Thanks for sharing.

Sumana,
ReplyDeleteBollywood films always seem to extol a sense of such happiness, though of a fairy tale nature. Sometimes 'the baddie,' is obvious, while the maiden is always rescued by the dark and handsome charmer!!! The music is the backbone, as usual. I enjoy watching them from time to time...Great supporting poem:)

I enjoy Indian movies like " Slumdog Millionaire" rather than the glitzy Bollywood ones.
ReplyDeleteThat flim is always a "featured one", mutual feeling :D :)
DeleteBollywood has all the works within each film. Love, sorrow, happiness, violence, intrigues the whole facet of human life. It is necessary to fulfill many dreams of the different likes of the audience. Wonderful write Sumana!
