The Birds

source

They arrived here last year

And made a litchi tree of our neighbor

Their home

The white bellied pond herons

With a buff-brown back

Strangely there wasn’t any water body

Where they roosted

Even croaky frogs left disgusted

As the pond was sucked up

And a dry new land appeared

For new houses, new life new happiness…….

With the pond

Vanished

The fishes, crustaceans and aquatic insects

Did the herons go foraging a long distance?

Strange is the way of Mother Nature

She must have fed the birds well

Otherwise how would they sing

Their night away

With those hoarse songs

And scare the skeptic owls?

The topsy-turvy dance of Nature

Scares me

Reminds me of Apocalypse

What’s gone wrong I wonder

They are still here

Their tribe multiplying

Massing

Have they seen Hitchcock’s birds?

  1. Tragic the way we are encroaching upon their livelihood

  2. Very powerful, Sumana. Your poem reads like a poetic observation of Nature, until one reaches the last lines. Then the mentions of Apocalypse and Hitchcock chill our bones.

  3. Life can be observed so well in the freedom of birds. There is a real mirror of how we are meant to live, in the way birds are provided for.

  4. Mother Nature cannot always be understood. This situation sounds very eerie really..especially with the mention of Hitchcock's birds.

  6. We have herons nesting in our area as well and they do not seem to always choose to be near water--and yes those croaky voices! And who can predict what nature will do? Thanks for posting this.

  11. Sumana,

A lovely poem, which captures interest as well as a puzzlement about the reasons for the birds to stay..I love the reference to Hitchcock and his birds..Scary thoughts...

  15. Beautifully written poem, Sumana. A very timely reminder about what we are doing to our environment and how it harms the other living species we share the planet with.
