Only a few were born free

Since the birth of mankind

They had a sky in their heart

Where an eternity of love dwelt

Truth was their mother tongue

They were one with every object

Living, non-living

The path they had trodden

Led to the dawn of freedom,

C i v i l i z a t i o n,

They had left a trail asking

To leave everything and follow

I hear their call

I listen to the song my soul sings

The song of freedom

Am I not tethered to Desire?

Alas!

Freedom is seldom for those who are

A slave to the senses

To the mind

To the body

  1. Perhaps desire and commitment bring a different kind of freedom. We are not sentenced to existential separateness! Can those who walk hand in hand not have "sky in their heart" and "truth" as a "mother tongue"? Perfect poem on freedom! I feel it between the lines. Perhaps freedom is in the questioning itself.

  2. There seems to be some inbuilt greed within mankind that cares not to love and share. Sadly love is so misunderstood.

  3. A sky in the heart - sounds most beautiful...true we can never be free from our desires..if they bring us joy maybe that is a good thing

  4. Being human... we are a slave to temptation and desire.. we yearn to be free.. from life's atrocities.. we seek solace.

    Beautifully executed!

  5. I am probably guilty of being a slave to the senses.

  6. Slavery is so easily taken and freedom is so hard to live in. This is very well captured in your words.

  8. I listen to the song my soul sings
    The song of freedom
Am I not tethered to Desire?

Longings and exploitation tends to put a damper as desire comes into play. It will unnecessarily disturb the equation and spoil the smoothness! Great lines Sumana!

  10. Freedom: Something everyone desires to achieve in his or her lifetime. Such a simple concept, yet many have trouble realizing how to obtain it. Sometimes we unintentionally create our own obstacles that prevent us from achieving this goal.I loved this line..., "I listen to the song my soul sings". Yes, follow your heart....The action will manifest itself if the heart is right. Exquisite!

  14. It is good to continue to listen to the song the soul sings. It is there, I think, that answers will be found..

  15. This is so alive - so strong, so full of quotable lines. It is SO interesting, because this poem could not come from U.S. or Europe, where peoples' minds have become numbed and selfish individualism is too strong, so this gives your wonderful cry for freedom an exotic air. But our lines are so philosophical, and not too emotional, and therein lies their strength. It is an intoxicating poem that one yearns to hear read aloud.

  16. A great look at another idea of freedom. Denying the desires is also a choice we can make.

  17. desire is natural...but we need to know its limits and value..that is true freedom

  20. yes a very well stated dilemma. That desire truly enslaves us.

  21. A beautiful poem, Sumana. True enough, few were given the gift of freedom as their birthright. Most have to attain freedom through a struggle and through many a sacrifice...
