Prayer is Power

“Power may make many earthly gods,
Where gold and bribery's guilt prevails,”---From the poem
Death by John Clare

source

We are their sleepy dolls

Holding our hands in fear

Set before the high pedestals

Where the earthly gods stand

Weaving meshes of mirage words

To entangle each one of us

To dance to their tune

And become parched

We whisper prayer

To wake up from this mesmerism

The touch of each of our hands

Warms us

We feel the gushing of stream

Each droplet made of dream

In our limbs

We stir with life

Holding a flame in the heart

We flare up

Their word bubbles burst

We come out of the noir-trap

  2. Oh I hope we do wake. These earth bound (self-proclaimed) gods have little power beyond putting on a fancy show and telling us how they will meet our promises. Much more power in prayer and communing with the God that can truly grant us what we need.

  3. Ah, those "noir traps": "Weaving meshes of mirage words
To entangle each one of us" May our dreams grow bolder and creep into our waking hours so we are not so passive in the face of our earthly gods and the other Gods they build in their images! Wow! LOVE this poem!

  4. I really liked this. Especially so as your quote from John Clare meant that I could look up into the book case and think "I really must read some of his poems again!" as some of your expressions sounded much like his.

  5. I like how the title is straight forward but the poem is full of twists and turns. A very powerful plea of praying together and finding strength.

  6. The power to break the bubble of power...i think freedom is in our mind set...once we change that than they become the plastic dolls! A powerful piece of prose Sumana

  11. I think we are coming out that noir-trap. At least I hope so. Good writing Samana. I like your descriptions of those in power.

  12. human connection common hopefulness, makes prayer powerful. One has to wonder if the concept of powerful prayer has not been misplaced in the hands of the Shepherd instead? We may never know but I believe this challenges that concept.

  16. That feeling of being at the receiving end in a conflict can never be understood when women and children are targeted. Your words reveal the desperation and terror faced by such groups! Well penned Sumana!

  20. Prayers is the most powerful. When doctors fail, it's the prayer that works. Beautifully penned. :)

  21. We each need to embrace prayer as a way of life. Those whispers can work miracles.

  22. Well-said, Sumana. I was talking to one of these arrogant earthly gods, once. After listening to inflated and self-aggrandising drivel for some time, after watching a shameless display of opulence and "power" that he wielded, I just quietly said to him: "Have you considered that tomorrow morning you may not be alive? Have you prepared yourself for that possibility?" He became silent after that and went away...
