Courage

source: Morguefile

It’s an effort to breathe

Without cease

When each moment

Strives to stifle

It’s giving, embracing

Without a complaint

Everyday

It’s the gentle breeze

Of candle light

Blowing away

The dusty darkness

It’s burning, melting

Without a stir

Every night

  1. Ah - courage to take just one more breath! Yes, sometimes life is like that....when even the next breath seems a struggle to be overcome.

  6. It does take courage to live. And yes, each breath burns us like a candle. It does give us life but brings us closer to death.

  7. Oh! You have my admiration in this. I breathe so easily that I forget, I forget the effort and challenge and courage of a single breath. Wow.

  8. Excellent to liken each breath to the lit candle...life and its wick...an eventual end...does the light get snubbed or does the life proceed to the end of its wick? Poignant.

  16. Life can deal such immense pain, Sumana, that each breath can seem to be our last and each inspiration of life-giving air can turn to poisonous fumes in our lungs. Somehow, we can find the courage to survive and carry on and light a candle in order to dispel the darkness that surrounds us... A lovely piece, but oh, so sad...

  17. Sumana,

I like this perspective about courage, as I understand that notion of breathing one's last...I used to suffer with that dreadful sensation during very stressful times; I'd awake from sleep gasping to breathe, thinking it was my last...It took courage to try and reassure myself.
