LIFE

illustration of W.T.Benda

I drink light and warmth to my fill
Dark night gives me moon, day the sun
Hungry hours can’t make my bone chill

Billowing sorrows around me are spun
I look upwards to see Zeus and Leto’s son

My fluttering wings bleed but my words fill the sky
Shining in the darkness they are never to die

TWO TANKAS ON SUCCESS

In each birth and death
Nature scripts Her success tale
I take cue from Her
Rivers dance to death in sea
Downward rushes blooming tree

Each deed done by Man
Is a link of success chain
I take cue from Him
Space shuttle Columbia
Ignites the mind forever

DESTINATION PINK CITY

I found the Pink City Express totally pink
Inside and out
Did Jaipur, the Pink City put on the pink look
I began to doubt
As the wheels moved on in cheerful rhythm
I was at leisure
Amazement was in newness in the charted out trip
There was only pleasure
And seeing Jaipur in strange rosy hue
I wasn’t surprised any more
Wouldn’t have I been more startled
If our life was such two-plus-two-four?

A Song

Why is the mind
Overcast with gray dreams
While the green heart
Still blooms periwinkles

Why is the crimson gypsy spirit
Stagnating in one place
While the magical life
Is fluttering on butterfly wings

Why is the Ego
Looking into the sky
While the soul
Remains grounded rooting

REST IN PEACE *

REST IN PEACE*

Like a moth thirsting for flame
He yearned for a female-mould
That became his Achilles’ Heel

Abdominoplasty
And hormone replacement over
He defied the world

How boldly he celebrated
His alternate sexuality
In the characters of his latest films

He enjoyed gender fluidity
But the mortal frame
Would not bear with the mess up

He lusted for life
Journey from femininity to androgyny
Ended abruptly

*this is in remembrance of Rituparno Ghosh,
the noted and gifted Bengali film maker who
passed away on May 30, 2013.

HEART
It’s a red lotus
The soft petals spread and hold
His radiant smile

It’s a fountain-head
Crystal-words cascade down
I pick up a handful

It’s a gust of wind
Blowing away rumbling clouds
I relish sunshine
