Exploring

Stems twist towards light

While the roots scoop life

From darkness

A sage once taught

That expansion is life

Contraction death

Like the universe expanding

We venture out towards growth

Through bright, black and blurred paths

Each step assures us

Of the sweet or bitter fruits

Of knowledge and perceptions

We are wise

Before that eternal slumber

In the cold earth chamber

Or on the fiery pyre bed

  1. Unfortunately it takes the whole life to arrive there! But we arrive, like the stem. Unlike the universe (I hope) we are mortal so we have to settle for only our portion of expansion before death. Brilliant. I believe we may be talking about the same phenomenon in our poems, though with very different comparisons. Yours expand me into a spiritual path. I think mine bring in the mundane and day to day.

  4. Sumana, I like thinking about the idea that expansion is life and contraction is death. Thank you for that. We do have to keep growing outward in new directions...otherwise we stagnate or retreat; and what kind of life is that!

  7. I am bit worried about that "Fiery pyre bed" I had better check my past! Joking aside this read so well and re-echoed our eternal question if we have been wise in our choices.

    That expansion is life

  13. I love the correlation to all living beings - it is a striving- Life.
So full of discovery so wrapped in failure - fulfillment is in both.
    Very intricate weaving these words!
