Love Is Not A Greeting Card

"Love doesn't just sit there, like a stone, it has to be made
like bread; remade all the time, made new"

-- Ursula K. Le Guin, The Lathe of Heaven

I won’t tie you up to my grief
My child
Be free, lie in the lap
Of God
My love is now free
From fear
Of losing you
Rest in peace
My child
In the heart of God

  1. Tears, sweet one, brilliant writer that you are, bringing the feeling to us. Mercy is harsh, absolute. God's lap softens it. Bless you.

  2. A mother's love is so selfless. "Be free, lie in the lap of God", when one just wants to hold on. Your poem - and you - are inspiring, Sumana. The worst loss a woman can suffer yet, as always, your first thought is for your child. I am so sorry for your loss. And so grateful for this poem.

  3. So tender and so true. There's nothing like a mother's love and nothing worse than the loss of a child. My heart goes out to you.

  6. The death of a child is a piece of death for you too. Thank God we have tears to weep to release that sorrow.

  7. Sumana, you have experienced one of the worst losses that someone can experience, and thinking of our child in the heart of God is perhaps the best human way to come to terms with it in our life. I hope you will again find meaning, but I cannot imagine this loss. Life is so often not fair, and we do search in vain for reasons. Peace with you, Sumana.

  9. Sumana, you've been gone a while? Missed you.
Your poem comes close to home. I recently returned from the funeral of a 25 year old. Not a child, but to his parents that's what he'll always be. It's devastatingly sad. I hope this poem resides only in your imagination.
