Eyes
All her singers are back
The tree dances in the breeze
Casting me an oblique look
With her thousand leaves
I look at her happy face
When the blue kingfisher
Swoops into the pond water
And gets its prize
When the black cuckoo with its red eyes
Gives incessant call to his beloved
When the white cranes
Meditate on one leg hiding the other
And the frogs with their bulging eyes
Cover for shelter
When a star peeps and winks
From the dusky sky
When darkness with its glowworm eyes
Twinkles in joy
When the owl mother feeds her babes
With the heart of a field mouse
When life dances in joy with death
When the cricket song fades
With the slow rise of a golden eye
When vision creates beauty
And all her singers are back
The tree dances in the breeze
Casting me an oblique look
With her thousand leaves
And I look at her happy face

What lovely sentiments in this poem, Sumana. And wonderful imagery. I like the way you have described the many eyes in nature, smiled when I read the repeated line 'all her singers are back' and really see 'her happy face.'
ReplyDeletemade me think of seeing the world through the eyes of a child, a bit...all the wonder..even at the field mouse heart being consumed...ha...
ReplyDeleteSo many views and eyes in nature. I was particularly struck by the references to feeding the babies with the heart of the dead mouse--somehow seemed quite profound to me.

ReplyDeleteSumana, the beauty in this poem is just phenomenal. I pictured each thing as I read....it is a cornucopia of beauty. I especially loved envisioning the white cranes.

ReplyDeleteSumana, I commented on your poem yesterday morning but my comment did not appear. It is a good thing I checked back.
ReplyDeleteYour poem made me feel I was a mother looking at her daughter as she discovers the world. Seeing the world through the eyes of a child makes us see it in a new way.
