Summer Solstice

The longest day

Draped in black monsoon sari

Weeps a river

I smile

At her kohl smudged eye

As my fevered skin breathes blessings

The twittering, chirping little fairies

Touch each other’s wings

Bathing in the little pools

Appearing on the pathways

My heart sprouts

Blue glossy peacock feathers

And dances with thunderclap songs

On this longest day of the year

Let the days shed their light

Let the dark hours be gleeful

Let time’s hand pluck

The weary leaf one by one

And cover the ground

Nothing can take away today’s joy

When the monsoon taps her dancing feet

And the sun stands still

  1. I LOVE this. We take the same topic and treat it magnificently differently. I'm not used to welcoming a monsoon, but I feel the relief as the heat peels off of you and as the the monsoon's leavings invite you to dance!

  2. It has been incredibly hot here. When the thunderstorms finally come, it is a sweet relief. I like the little magic you imbue in this as well in the fairies and such.

I smile / At her kohl smudged eye" This is a poem to lift the heart. I especially love the monsoon tapping her dancing feet.

  18. Summer Solstice - the longest day of the year, when the earth is most inclined towards the sun - I loved the way that you played with the magic of that. And yes, the personification is wonderful!

  20. How delightful this is, Sumana! The monsoons of course are essential for the revitalisation of nature and the growth of new crops. So when the rains come, I can imagine the unbridled joy fo the populace - well expressed here!
