Time Travel

Anxious faces of loved ones

See tears rolling down her cheeks

While her eyes are still closed

Though she can see

The green fields of yore

And she is playing there as a child

She hears the loving voices

Of her dear ones who are no more

She sees her as a bride

While the grooms face is vague

He left her long ago

When he breathed his last

She sees scenes after scenes

Taken from her life

Though her eyes remain closed

And tears stream down her cheeks

Her bosom still heaves slowly

Then becomes still

The loved ones bend over

Whispers fill the air

  2. There are times when the veil def grows thin, and we can see those that have gone on. To be the one still here, can be tough as well - especially if it is a spouse that precedes you

  3. Great images here for your flashback to her youth and life...something one does at times like this. You had me at the beginning with the title!

  6. Your words convey the feeling that death does not have to be hard for the one leaving this world as she gently remembers the past. There is something very comforting about the tone of your poem, Sumana.

  11. We all hope our last moments will be peaceful, the way you've portrayed them. Just before a friend's husband died, he spoke these comforting words: "Don't worry. It's easy." Similar to the serenity your woman experiences.

  14. They do say that your life flashes before your eyes in those final moments - glad to see it was mostly pleasant memories for the woman in your poem.

  15. The reminds me of lines in Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock: till human voices wake us and we drown. I sat by my grandmother as she died and witnessed that last breath. And yes, the veil between us moves and we can briefly see. I like to think when we die, we all see these peaceful and happy visions of our lives.

  17. Such sorrowful moments seem suspended in time..perhaps necessarily so? Despite the pain maybe it is a way remembrance and a window into the green fields that i hope everybody we lose gets once again to return to - a beautiful poem Sumana..tender and strong

  20. This made me remember the final episode of the series "Six Feet Under". The last remaining character is waiting for her final moment - her loved ones are all around her.

    Beautifully touching write, Sumana

Dying pleasantly and with dignity is what one hopes for! The grace with what one leaves reflects how sincere and kind a life it was! Great lines Sumana!

  22. A short epic that turns each reader into a film director, filling up her past story.
Even though set in India, this poem could also be set in Greece, or Cyprus. A very complete write, at once tender, comforting, very sad...

  30. I have seen this, in those who are dying, Sumana, how their last thoughts are with those old memories. I echo Mary, those loved ones are waiting for her arrival. I believe this. So beautifully written, as always.

  33. This terrified me. Yes, family and friends were all around at the end. But someone still died, and for that one person, the world completely disappears.

  34. Sumana,

This poem reminds me of some sad dreams I have had; so frightened by the happenings taking place, that I have wakened up crying. They usually do involve a loss of family or love..Very powerfully emotional Sumana.
