A Green Mirror

Source: Google Image

A green little pond

Is a rare sight in Kolkata these days

Icing on the cake is

There is a blue, blue kingfisher too

Swinging on the cable wire

Loosely hanging over the pond

Pondering perhaps:

To dive or not to dive

In the wink of an eye

It goes in

Fishes

There’s a silver flash

In its long brown beak

I am fed too

With happiness

How I wish this pond to hold on

To its fish-dream forever

If I had the power

I would hide it

From the greedy eyes of Real Estates

  1. I hope there are still ponds.. I think there has to be something real in real estate...

  2. "I am fed too/With happiness" -- I simply love this. It speaks so much to how I feel when I quietly observe nature.

  4. I would like to hide so many places. My country, Mexico, is destroying so much, thanks to corruption and the shine of tourist's money.

  5. I love those charming Kingfishers and I smiled to learn that they even love to perch on wires in India like they do here. I love those quiet observances in nature that feed my soul too. Lovely, Sumana.

  6. I absolutely love the same line which de has mentioned. Your poem's closing causes me to cringe...it's so sad how many lands are taken from the animals...

  7. I wish for every building built there was a nature garden round it. Your poem says much about present day profit in so many parts of the world. I loved the variety of birds I saw in India in the 80s. And in towns.

  9. Oh, how I hope greed doesn't eat this lovely pond that can feed the eyes of those, like you, who are grateful for it.

  13. Well said, Sumana. The developers are back to work now that the housing market has improved--the deer, fox, groundhogs, etc., that live on the land near me are on the move, and unfortunately, are too often the victims of unprepared drivers.
