I
smell darkness
in
the bloody dawn
when
tooth and nail
of
man hunters*
glint.
Their
whispers
reek
of gargantuan carcasses
numbing
my nostrils.
Are the rose blooming days
a distant dream?
*Recent Assembly election in my
State saw atrocities to rig polls by the ruling party who left no stone
unturned to resort to this violence. However in most cases the police and
military came to the rescue and people could vote though shooting and murders
could not be averted.

The juxtaposition in your poem is alarming and gripping, Sumana!
ReplyDeleteBTW my comment on 'Secrecy' doesn't appear there...kindly check the junk folder and retrieve..thank you:)
My goodness, such strong and powerful images in your poem Sumana, I was especially mesmerized with the last two lines with reference to "rose blooming days a distant dream?" Beautifully executed.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for participating at Prompt Nights and for your constant love and support :D
Lots of love,
Sanaa
Profound write dear Sumana. These questions truly follow our noses after reading and viewing the atrocities of today's world
ReplyDeleteMuch love...
A very powerful poem made even more so by the suggestion of scent.
ReplyDeleteAre the rose blooming days
ReplyDeletea distant dream?
One begins to question oneself when things seem to be heading the wrong directions. It can happen some days yes, Sumana!

Let's hope "the rose blooming days" will come, that the flowers will feed in the courage that dared to shine through the human muck, that truth and right blossom as it should.
ReplyDeleteSuch a powerful piece, Sumana! ♥
Unfortunately it seems the rose blooming days are coming to an end in many regions. The smell of darkness is all too pungent these days.
ReplyDeleteSumana, your poem is worded to perfection. It is amazing to me, after so many centuries, that humankind remains stubbornly so unenlightened. Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.
ReplyDeleteMy goodness – and we think America has problems! (Or Australia for that matter.) But, even worse than having to choose between unappealing candidates, is not to have a true choice at all.
ReplyDeleteTo manipulate the voting thus, in a pretense of democracy. A sad state, I still hope there will be secret gardens filled with roses.
ReplyDeleteI smell brimstone!
ReplyDeleteWhen I liken the "rose-blooming" days to the potential of democracy, I fear so. I fear the days are over unless the bloody dawns end, and those who grab at power find something else to live for Can we interest hunters into gathering instead?
ReplyDeleteWhat a perfect description of scent and how it feels - darkness and the body dawn are almost tangible in their aroma - oh for roses
ReplyDeletePerfect title for this dark occurrences. Our country is voting its new leader tomorrow too and I am hoping that it will be violence-free.
ReplyDeleteHappy Sunday Sumana
ReplyDeleteMuch love...
Such atrocities committed in the name of politics and power...beautifully rendered with power and sadness.
ReplyDeleteDonna@LivingFromHappiness
the first line already demands attention.
ReplyDeletea powerful write! the stakes are too high and these people are just out for personal gain, i guess.
Like many people have said, those first lines really bring the reader in. Smelling darkness... what a great line.
ReplyDeleteIt's amazing how ugly politics can be. It's such a divisive force that wants to convince us we are separate not equal.
ReplyDeleteDays of darkness seem to be spreading all over the world...
ReplyDeleteI believe we all wish for those rose blooming days...
ReplyDeleteElizabeth
It's so sad that so often, all over the globe, there is too often darkness associated with the election process. Well expressed.

Very nicely done Sumana.. it's so tragic that everything has become about power and greed at any cost..
ReplyDeleteSo evocative!
ReplyDeleteA powerful poem! I hope darkness lifts to reveal the rose blooming days.
ReplyDeletemonstrous - you really give that sense of injustice in your words.
ReplyDeleteAn intense and powerful piece. Pinning the events of dark days against the scent of blood and the hope that fragrant roses will return, is truly inspired. A moving piece, Sumana.
ReplyDeleteYou portrayed your "disgust" beautifully XXX
ReplyDeleteWhen the people cannot speak the way the way of life we wish for will be lost, good writing.
ReplyDeleteWow!
ReplyDeleteAn amazing write!
ReplyDeleteI loved the way you started: "I smell darkness
ReplyDeletein the bloody dawn"
Such a powerful expression!
Strong and intensely concentrated write...
