EXPECTATION

That my eyes see not
Any blemish anywhere
My new year’s hope

That my ears hear not
Politicians’ tongue-lash
My new year’s hope

That I do possess
A low-profile nose to smell
My new year’s hope

That my tongue utters
Thy name in pleasure and pain
My new year’s hope

That all do I touch
Be not without Thy sweet Will
My new year’s hope

Bamboo – A Tanka
     Gaia’s blessed child
Your thousand green eyes tremble
    Though you sway a No
Man’s concrete hands approaching
To grab your home for high-rise

        A TANKA

On the white darkness
A pale orange flow trickles
Grasses melt in joy
Stretchy days on sparrow’s wings
Listen to the twittering

      A Moment Remembered

The wonderful toys receded away
The child moved on with insatiable hunger
In his eyes, following the parsimonious parents
I was following him, keeping a sharp lookout
Without his knowledge of course
Until he lost trace of his parents
In that teeming hundreds of the village fair

Aw look at his panic stricken face
Oh how he is grieving his loss
Of the greatest gifts of God, his parents

‘Ma’m, the village is so small
He’ll find his parents’…say my pupils
Snapping my reverie…….’of course he will,
Mulk Raj Anand’s Lost Child’* I answer

And become a lost child myself
My heart secretly mourning
For my father, in the classroom…..

*Mulk Raj Anand was a renowned author and critic of India. Most of his stories are based on the life of the toiling masses of India. Lost Child is a short story included in the English syllabus of secondary education in West Bengal.

Nelson Mandela – In Memoriam

In the heart of darkness
You played with light
You became light
You burned
Scattered
Light
Scattered
Burned you
Light became you
Light played with you
Darkness of heart thinned

                   BEAUTY PAGEANT

The cadaverous lady in huge black glasses
Feather-boa on shoulders lavishly dances
The devilish bird on her crown
Sets judges whisper gibberish
And has irrational audience
 In the aisle rolling
Not odd but natural this happens in a show
What’s wrong if she has on her head a crow?
The more this soothing lunacy
The better is the amusement
The frenzied madmen
Will pawn life for the system
If their credentials questioned will catastrophe dawn?
Vulgar gossips of a high degree go on and on……………

An Owl Song by a Ten Year Old Naturalist

My cute, nocturnal feathered fay
Are you going the dodo way?
Your weary wings screech for barns
            No rodents, no marshlands
            Mother Nature’s wondrous gift
            Homeless, jobless on wings adrift
This nesting box is a gift from me
Give me owlets I want to see

SARADA  MA **

Your eyes are made of light and voice of song
Stones melt and mould at your beaming smile
To drink your nectar-words devotees throng
Traversing miles

‘I am mother of the righteous and the vile’
You say this weaving a love-web so strong
Children of all races and time bond, smile

Your presence in my heart I do so long
That I can make the world my own and smile
Journey through countless births to right the wrongs
Traversing miles
