The King of Cats, 1935, Balthus

                                                                    (self-portrait)

The brush was his vehicle
To take him
To the mysterious world
Of Color and canvas
And place him there
Forever
He hadn’t forgotten
To take with him
That voyeur feline
They will stare
For centuries
And enjoy visits
To them
Be aware

The Potato Eaters by Vincent Van Gogh

Spirit is breathless
Scanning and following rhythm
Plunge into free verse

Perspectives and lines
Grammatical art and craft
Potato Eaters* smile

Classic notes rule well
No strumming, drumming, humming
Add words and bring joy

Black calendar dates
To tie us up with routine
Sunday is red…YAY

*: 'Let them prattle on about technique as much as they like in their pharisaic, hollow, hypocritical terms--true painters are guided by the consciousness known as sentiment. Their souls, their minds are not there for the brush, the brush is there for their minds'………this was Vincent Van Gogh’s reaction to the critics who failed to appreciate Van Gogh’s sincerity to portray peasants” at their most purest and most primitive living in harmony with their unspoiled natural environment”.

What is your name?
Green Flame
Oh are you fire?
No, desire
What is then your demand?
The polka dot sky and the Land
And pray tell me why?
I want to grow
Till I die

Wisteria vines
Stand for immortality
With poison in pods

Political men
Promise a garden of rose
And thorns intended

Young couples get spliced
Beneath the lavender-glow
Best wishes for them

LEDA AND THE SWAN*

Leda And The Swan, by Odilon Redon

The white swan with its huge wings beating hard
White lilied Leda couldn’t escape that glance
The painter saw and Yeats and the blind Bard
Leda fought, bled and went into a trance
Omnipotent Zeus looked upon the Earth
Lilies shuddered and waited for the doom
While Leda laid eggs and saw that strange birth
The Earth counted days for that huge Mushroom
Shadows roam about the necropolis
Whistling of heavy sighs still could be heard
Unnatural children grace mothers’ wombs
There are still takers for poisoned chalice
In the sky one can still spot that huge bird
In the same world lilies dream of their tombs

*Leda and the Swan is a story and subject in art from Greek mythology in which the god Zeus, in the form of a swan, seduces, or rapes, Leda. According to later Greek mythology, Leda bore Helen and Polydeuces, children of Zeus, while at the same time bearing Castor and Clytemnestra, children of her husband Tyndareus, the King of Sparta. In the W.B. Yeats version, it is subtly suggested that Clytemnestra, although being the daughter of Tyndareus, has somehow been traumatized by what the swan has done to her mother (see below). According to many versions of the story, Zeus took the form of a swan and raped or seduced Leda on the same night she slept with her husband King Tyndareus. In some versions, she laid two eggs from which the children hatched.[1] In other versions, Helen is a daughter of Nemesis, the goddess who personified the disaster that awaited those suffering from the pride of Hubris.

She tiptoes
With a faint smile
       And
Butterfly blooms
Blooms buzz
Nectar’s brimful
     Then
Petals brown
She’s scorched
 Breathless
      It’s
All a moment’s glow
