LOST AND FOUND

Arun, Barun, Kiranmala by Shailen Ghosh courtesy : google image

When I was a fourth grader

I lost a story book in school

I can still remember that lump

In the throat, that frantic search

And rebukes from the elders

That story of three siblings

Based on a popular folk-tale

Had beautiful songs and rhymes

The book was half read

And to add salt to injury

Vanished from the market

Decades after decades passed

The brothers and their only sister

Were lost in the darkness of oblivion

A few years ago

In a book fair in our small town

I found the book in a stall

Not losing a moment I bought it

“Why this fairy tale now?” says my daughter

“Oh it’s not a book, it’s my childhood” I tell her

AT 13

Lucky or unlucky

Whatever you are

You’ll always remain

As a honeyed word

My unforgettable teen

Began with you

On the African soil

That seemed so new

A new mould of me

And those fairytale hours

All your gifts

I still savor

My sweet thirteen

PAST

1902 wasn’t that far

I felt its pulse

Heard its voice

Saw the movement of history

As I touched my grandfather

Who was a 1902 born

And saw this vast land

Being pieced

And shackled with borders

Blood oozing out slowly

From Gandhi...

Now the olden times

Don’t vibrate with life

Memories are only memories

THE MOON
courtesy : google image

When I see you

Only sense of vision

Remains

Words vaporize

A mystic emptiness

Resides

That soft, silver flow

Cooling me down

Spreads

Darkness melts away

The sterling night

Meditates

THE TOWER OF BABEL*

Artist : Chelsea Bednar
courtesy : Imaginary Garden With Real Toads

Those were not dream bubbles

But solid sweat and toil

Oneness sailed smoothly in joy

In the hope of light

That fear-beat sensed troubles

And unrest began to boil

Hovering eyes pledged to destroy

The amity with all might

Hope disintegrated

 In thousand

Languages

Everyone

Was

Dazed

The super power gloated

Self-satisfied

* The Tower of Babel forms the focus of a story told in the Book of Genesis of the Bible.[1] According to the story, a united humanity of the generations following the Great Flood, speaking a single language and migrating from the east, came to the land of Shinar with the intention of building a tower reaching heaven. The Lord confound their language, that they may not understand one another's speech as He feared that nothing would be restrained from them which they would imagine to do. This policy of divide and rule is religiously followed by the rulers everywhere. I used Chelsea Bednar’s sketch and tried to combine Challenge #1:  Words Count with Mama Zen and Challenge #3:  "Figurative Language" .

WHITE FRAGRANT NIGHT

The white fragrant night

The only solace for summer heat

All these sun hating blooms

Dispel my sweaty gloom

Their scented greetings fill me

And draw my Te Deum towards them

A bevy of beautiful maidens

Whitely clad in potted garden

 My Gandharaj*, Beli** and Juin***

Love your brief sojourn

*Gardenia angusta

**Jasminum sambac

SIGH

courtesy : google image

I can’t find that rhythm

The seasons once danced in

The air is grave and stern

I wish to bring back the hamadryads

For my skin burns as the leaves sigh

I wish I could dig a brand new river

Unblemished by human hands

Then watch its stealthy flow

Alas! That is not to be

For those hands

Have heaven and earth

 In their unholy grip
